A Home Study is a document required for all types of adoption, (private, U.S. domestic and international). The Home Study is conducted by a trained social worker from a licensed child placing agency prior to the child placement in the adoptive home. Generally two or three meetings with prospective adopters are required to complete the evaluation. One meeting must be in the home for purposes of assessing the home is a safe and a healthy environment for the child.
During the Home Study, applicants explore their feelings about adoption and select the type of adoption that is best for the family and the prospective child. The social worker obtains biographical information, factual data (date of birth and marriage, employment verification, financial and health status), family data (stability of marriage, experience with children, disposition) and motivation for adoption.
Adoption Consultants conducts homestudies for Michigan families and accepts home study evaluations from other agencies. For non-Michigan families we are available to consult with the other agency at any time during the process.
